Service Tools for Two Way Radios
When it comes to two-way radio shops there are numerous tools available that can help enhance customer service. These tools give the ability to test and trouble shoot radio equipment (both for end-user gear and infrastructure equipment), and design two-way radio systems for optimum performance and reliability. The application of these tools enhances dealer credibility, and ultimately, customer confidence.
Examples of Service Tools include:
Spectrum Analyzer
- RF spectrum analyzers are test instruments used to look at signals in the frequency domain, (i.e. a plot of signal strength against frequency)
- Spectrum analyzers are widely used test instruments for applications where RF testing is needed: in development, verification and validation testing; production; base service and repair, and increasingly in field installation and service.
- The spectrum analyzer is a particularly important item of test equipment for anyone undertaking the test and measurement of circuits and systems involving radio frequency or RF signals.
Spectrum Analyzers can be used in a number of tasks, such as:
- Looking at the frequency spectrum of a signal with the purpose of analyzing the overall spectrum of a modulated signal, to investigate whether any spurious or unwanted signals are present, and to find out whether a signal is on the right frequency.
- To investigate general problems with a signal. Often it can just help looking at a signal to see what a problem is. With RF signals a spectrum analyzer can prove to be the eyes for the person investigating the problem.
These are very expensive devices to acquire but are an essential piece of equipment for any full service 2-way radio shop.
Telewave 44A RF Wattmeter
- The Telewave Model 44A RF Wattmeter is a compact, versatile instrument used for direct measurement of forward and reflected RF power in a coaxial transmission line under any load conditions. These are important measurements to test and validate the integrity of a radio circuit, transmission line or antenna.
- The RF sample port on Model 44AP samples a low level of RF power as it passes through the instrument. This bi-directional port is accessed via a BNC connector located on the side of the meter. It allows injection of a signal into the device under test or can be used for spectrum analysis and frequency measurements without affecting operation of the meter.
- Five power scales are provided. The 500-watt scale will test most high-powered transmitters, while the 5-watt scale makes it simple to tune low powered portables. The excellent stability of this unit and the ability to switch it from one power range to another to check the calibration eliminates the need for a secondary standard to verify calibration.
RF Industries – Cable TesterÂ
- RFA-4018-20 RF Industries Uniadapt Cable Tester detects open and short faults in coaxial cable assemblies. This cable tester will check the integrity of any cable circuit, essential to the proper operation of a 2-way radio network. The device indicates pass or fail with a simple red light, green light. It also saves time by indicating whether the failure is due to a short, open conductor or open shield. The RFA-4018-20 is powered by a 9volt battery. It is lightweight, small, and completely portable for remote site use.
Features:
- Powered by a 9-volt battery.
- Lightweight, small & completely portable.
- Â LED panel on front of tester indicates pass or fail.
- Â If Fail, panel saves valuable diagnostic time by indicating whether due to Short, Open Conductor or Open Shield.
- Â Cable condition is indicated on LED panel.
